About the Print:

Introducing Lovelight, an enchanted woodland fairytale that features the magical work of artist Charles van Sandwyk. A world-renowned illustrator and writer, van Sandwyk is beloved for his luminous, old-world drawings and watercolours, bringing to life fairies, woodland creatures, and the secret corners of nature with a sense of wonder and nostalgia. His work, reminiscent of classic Golden Age illustrators, is steeped in folklore, whimsy, and an almost-forgotten gentleness. We are deeply honoured and overjoyed to be collaborating with Charles, whose work has long been a meaningful source of inspiration for us here at Market of Stars!
Lovelight was created using a collage of several pieces of Charles’ work, including a majestic guardian swallow carrying a lantern that cradles a glowing star, a delicate watercolour moth, and a star-dappled fawn nestled in the moonlit woods. The whole collection is edged with a piece of poetry by van Sandwyk, which wraps the wearer in words as soft as the dawn: I had a dream in dark of night, before the hills were kissed with light. Like so much of Charles’ work, Lovelight is a tribute to the radiance each of us carries within — the love, empathy, and creative spark. It is the glow of a lantern swinging in the night, the starlight on the path, and the soft brilliance of a heart that chooses kindness.

Cotton/spandex blend outer, lined in poly fleece. Machine wash gentle or handwash, gently reshape and lay flat to dry.

Please note: Because of the unique custom-woven fabric of our cozy fleece-lined Cottage Cardigans, the artwork has a softer, vintage-washed finish with more muted colours than our other pieces. This is an intentional part of their look and charm. We take all our measurements on a garment lying flat. So the circumference would be roughly double the listed number. See Sizing Diagram in photos for approximate measurements.

Our Cottage Cardigan is so cool & versatile, and our dreamy Lovelight print is one you’ll be reaching for again and again. Pack it along on your weekend getaway and layer it with a simple tee or a button-up shirt and your favourite jeans and sneakers — super cute and comfortable. On cool summer evenings, drape it loosely over a linen slip dress, and add sandals and simple gold accessories. And don’t be afraid to mix in other prints — try a plaid shirt for an eclectic and unexpected take on layering. We’ll be wearing ours with a tiered skirt in sage, distressed boots and gold jewelry — a creative, cozy look for whatever the day holds!

Charles van Sandwyk is a beloved, award-winning Canadian artist whose work feels like a secret doorway into a more magical world—one filled with well-dressed animals, curious fairies, and gentle forest folk. Born in South Africa and raised in Vancouver, he was the kind of child who practiced calligraphy for fun and performed magic tricks on a unicycle. His early love for antique books and golden-age illustrators still echoes through every brushstroke and pen flourish.

Charles splits his time between the lush forests of British Columbia and a quiet island in Fiji, where he creates in a thatched-roof hut with no electricity—just the sound of waves and wonder. His handmade books, like “How to See Fairies” and “The Parade to Paradise”, have become collector’s treasures, and he’s lent his enchanting touch to Folio Society editions of The Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland. Our Lovelight collaboration with Charles includes an excerpt from his illustrated book-length poem “Tree Whispers”—a piece he dreamed one night and remembered word-for-word upon waking, as if the forest itself had recited it to him.

her garden in darkness
and the river that once sang to her
too depleted to hear;
wispy aromas from wild violets
roses, sage and something deeper
draw her toward an opening
where field meets woods; 
she turns, takes one step
another, and enters

a half-remembered place
soft as moth wings
cool spaces
between the trees, hushed 
moss and stillness
drifts of ferns, shadowy
moist smells of growth
and whispered promises 
of flowers not yet open
there is almost light

she steps further in
her feet are bare now
toes gripping the earth
